With an eye toward light adventure, our trek through life is better shod with something sturdy. Boots? Sure. Good solid toe protection is key.
A stout, resilient coat, unimpeded by excessive outer clinging gadgetry that catches on the branches that drag against us and slow us down, is also imperative.
But you also need to avoid the people who step on your feet and poke you when you’re not looking. It is most important to be cloaked against that.
Some of our co-adventurers find dark pleasure in ensuring that their energy is distributed daily, slowing others down, as you can see in the comment section of every forum on the Internet, at your workplace or office, and sometimes right beside you in your family and friends.
The ratio of helpers to cheerleaders has dropped to record-low levels.
There’s a bible verse, Matthew 8:20, that reads, ” For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (NIV).
What might be missing, and I’m no scholar, so don’t put too much weight on my thoughts on this, is that when one of the three walks away, it won’t be too long before the remaining gaggle begins to point out the flaws of the missing.
It’s human nature, I guess. But it serves no purpose other than to break each other down incrementally and sometimes worse.
The thing is, we’ve each had a chance to be one of those walking away and one of the left behind. We’ve thrown the stones, and we’ve been the recipient.
I’ll do better on both counts. Find folks who don’t bring you down, and be one of them when possible.
This trip is too important to be one of those who make it more painful for others.
From the Jagged Edge of America, I remain,
